Golden Animals (Southern California)

"When they rock out in the faux-blues readymade "The Steady Roller," you can practically inhale the pungent aroma of their pirate shirts. They're a marriage made in psychedelic desert-blues heaven." – Blender Magazine

"Eisner's voice is deep, dark, and moving, like Johnny Cash's gruffness meeting Devendra Banhart's serenade, while Beecroft's croon is soft, light, and sweet. Though different as night and day, the two combined in harmony strike a balance that is beautiful and haunting." – Venuszine

I, Crime

"They're fuzzy enough to get next to, but then you realize that that fuzz might be fiberglass insulation. Either way, they'll help you compulsively scratch the itch with boy-girl harmonies, bittersweet stories and a hang-loose rock swing that are part-bubblegum, part L.A.-punk circa 1977." -Detroit Metro Times

National Ghost

"National Ghost believe in muisc with passion and soul. They strive to capyure much of the unbound energy of the earliest days of free form rock, pop, funk, soul, folk and jazz without being retro, focusing heavily on the song writing process..National Ghost blends the best parts of what makes music great; they'll make you move, groove, laugh and cry and leave you smiling eye ti I. Yep"

the Black List

"There is no question about what Detroit's own "The Black List" has set out to accomplish: mayhem with a melody. This high-energy quartet has quickly caught the attention of the Detroit music insiders as the band to pay attention to in the future. Taking a cue from other Detroit artists like The Stooges and MC5, the live show is a no-frills sonic kick in the mouth. This combined with memorable melodies; insightful lyrics, layered feedback and a blue collar work ethic. There is no doubt after seeing The Black List - you have witnessed the new pride of the Motor City."

the Lessmores

"Enough of the existential diatribes already. There's a world full of people out there waiting to be saved. This feeling surely cannot be unique to me and only me. This feeling has wheels. This feeling cannot grow any longer as stagnantly as nightly reactions to the evening news. Can we please be beyond that by now? Can we all agree that the womb of cynicism has burst? I am too drunk for my houghts. I am too conscience for modern life. Can the next fad be a rediscovery of the soul? Can we please evolve in the ditches ofpotential thought? Can hope be found in the ashes of our own confessions? Set down your anger and find its veiled roots. Wrap yourself in its wooden rope and warp its grasp with your sweat. The internal swell will turn the rusted gears of the external world. We did
rock'n'roll."

Cave System

"Local experimental instrumental trip-rock, somewhat sparse at points, but engaging in its collision of sounds from a trio (Nicholas Koenig, Eric Schmeling, Erik Daniel) of barely-20-somethings playing just guitars. There are elucidating, detached narratives of wavy dreamscapes in a fusion of lo-fi, guitar-heavy rock and tripped-out ambiance; music for your head, but cerebrally speaking, indeed, with no rhythm whatsoever. There's no head banging, but plenty of moments of transfixed pondering born from the sway of overlaying chilly guitar strums and homegrown vibes of basement tape earnestness." - REAL DETROIT WEEKLY FEB 06 2008

Love Meets Lust

"Love Meets Lust has a good thing going. On the surface, this Detroit quartet's sound is heavily '80s-influenced dance pop that easily holds its own among the throng of bands currently pilfering that sound, including Bloc Party and the Rapture. And in a city that's currently as well-known for birthing techno as it is for its gritty garage rock, Love Meets Lust's dance-crazed live shows have been attracting big, diverse audiences. The key here, though, is music that's broad enough to pull fans from several disparate scenes. Mixing great hooks, thumping electro-beats and a measured helping of Trent Reznor's early-day angst a la Pretty Hate Machine, Love Meets Lust bridges the gaps between hipster indie kids, gloomy goth rockers, day-glo accessorized club goers, and Top 40 arena rock fans. Vocalist-programmer John Webb and keyboardist-programmer Mike Stefanski take on the task of songwriting, with Jeff Arcel and Wes Alfonsi rounding out the sound with guitar and bass respectively. What? No drummer? Nope. True to the '80s new-wave tradition, heavy synth beats dominate Bitter Company in lieu of a
guy with sticks. Thankfully, though, Webb's lyrics and delivery are
emotive enough to keep the sound human, if at times a bit melodramatic. On "Direction," one of the album's standouts, he sings, "If everyone's the same here, then why am I alone, wasting time, chasing something I can never find?"
Despite the brooding, the guys of Love Meets Lust still have a sense of humor, which serves as the first line of defense against would-be detractors. Along with the standard shirts and stickers fans can find at their merch table, there are also buttons — one of which reads, "Drum machines have no soul." After listening to Bitter Company, it's clear they've found the formula to prove that sentiment wrong." -Laura Witkowski/MetroTimes

Eat Sugar Music(Cincinnati)

"Eat Sugar features some local Indie vets who have combined to create an exciting brand of Electro-fused Indie New Wave. The tracks on the band's MySpace site are propulsive, danceable herk-n-jerk Post Punk that bring to mind the early records from Dayton's legendary Brainiac." - City Beat

Sex Ghost

"The early hour didn't dampen Sex Ghost's love missile fervor. The
sunlight still streaming through the skylights of the Magic Stick just made the duo's lovaman-cum-hype woman grind-pop more out of sorts when you discovered it, as if you walked into your doctor's office and there they were, set up in the corner and broadcasting their collective dirty mind to the unsuspecting ears of a crowd gathered in the waiting room. Sex Ghost will see you now-JOHNNY LOFTUS"

“The kind of thing that could be a good backdrop for bar-brawling fun… Dashes of harmonica, twittering keyboards, female backing vocals and a well-defined rhythm section… On the mic, (Randy) Bishop is a pop philosopher, a jaded rock warrior… as he describes the bar band’s struggle for something more.”

Flophouse

"Although physically rooted in Detroit, Flophouse's soulful mix of rock, funk, blues and R&B evokes the great music traditions of Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago. Perhaps it's Flophouse's lead singer Victor Colon, who's smoky yet spirited voice, draws frequent comparisons to the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. Or drummer Brian "Super B" Smith's and bassist Paul "P-dog" Hunt's unadulterated commitment to "funky groove rock" that has more bodies swaying then Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. Finally, there's the polished riffage of guitarist Mike "Hollywood" Adkins -who masterfully weaves it all together into a spicy, sonic stew;Flophouse's extraordinary sound has not gone unnoticed. Hand picked from thousands of entries, Flophouse was chosen to perform at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival in Chicago in 2007. Clapton's acclaimed event received massive media coverage in Rolling Stone, VH1, PBS and more. "We play every show as if we are playing a sold out concert at Madison Square Garden …even if it's at Jimmy's Sports Bar and Fish Fry," explains Super B."

Chris Richards & the Subtractions

"Well it's like any of the small sub genres of pop rock. Power pop is all about songs dripping in melody and delivered with a punch. The simplicity of power pop makes it very endearing to us. Most power pop bands wear their influences proudly on their sleeves...however bands that get to close in sound to their hero's take it too far in my opinion. Power pop will always be summed up to me as a sound steeped in the tradition of the Beatles, the Who, the Kinks and the Beach Boys." -Chris Richards himself

the Banana Convention

"The musical equivalent of No Doubt and The Presidents of the USA having a steel cage battle, with The B-52s as the referee. The Banana Convention is a pop/rock band based out of Saginaw, Michigan. Fronted by the beautiful and talented Mighty Aftrodytee, The BC bring to the stage a cavalcade of music and fun every time they perform."

Spontaneous Generation

"On a cold, gray afternoon in early 2008, Anthony, John, Kevin, Lance and Tony met and formed Spontaneous Generation. Veterans of the Detroit, Boston, Baltimore and New York music scenes, they have combined their talents to produce a unique brand of rock'n'roll. Their goal is ambitious: To redeem rock from the corporate and mundane, the slick and tired. Their plan simple: Start with a solid foundation of distortion and fuzz, add a few scoops of melody, and top off with a healthy dollop of feedback. Based on their "take no prisoners" live shows and a handful of exciting demos, Spontaneous Generation have already established a faithful fan following and garnered critical acclaim. Ladies and Gentlemen, get ready for . . . Spontaneous Generation!"

Aran Ruth

"Each night, as it passes from its waking state into the sleep-and-dream state, the brain spends some time in the alpha wave frequency. During this brief pit stop before sliding into actual sleep, the consciousness is momentarily bombarded by a rapid-fire barrage of vivid imagery and dream snippets. Boundaries of time and space collapse, and sprawling epics are sketched out in the span of a few breaths. The black magic space folk of Aran Ruth seems to emanate from that same alpha wave ether; beamed to us, one reckons, by a phantom network of invisible AM radio towers."

Kelly Jean Caldwell

"kjc was conceeved in the upper peninsula of michigan on halloween night 1977 in the dugout of the cooks little league baseball field. her father was costumed as a great black bear and her mother as a sexy nurse. this wild scene surely set the stage for the rest of her noerthern childhood. kelle's first song was written about a beautiful silver door knob in the bathroom of her second grade klassroom and soon afterwards she formed her first band SAVACALD with her cousins, tara and tanya savage and her brother, dusty ray. those were fucking great times. ultimately, kelly moved to southern michigan and was not inspired to participate in any more bands until she was 21 and pure booze was flowing through her burnin'
blood. she joined the ann arbor band, and spiders, and had a really great time making songs again."

Royal Bangs(Knoxville Tennessee)
If you missed them on tour with the Black Keys, you can see them here.

"Ah, so many sexy Bonnaroo memories from '08! Let's start off with a bang, specifically Royal Bangs, our new favorite rockers, whose late-night set featured tracks from the Knoxville quintet's awesome new album, We Breed Champions" - Austin Scaggs, Rolling Stone, Issue 1056/1057, July 10-24

"Bonnaroo Reviewed: Royal Bangs Knoxville, TN-bred quintet sway this journalist with turbo-pop song craft, melodic keys, frantic guitars and seemingly unlimited energy. Our first discovery of Bonnaroo '08, Royal Bangs hit my radar as a "why not?"late night suggestion, and now-though only one day in-rates as the best show I've yet to see. Led by the bearded force that is Ryan Schaefer, the quintet churned out their multi-tasking, multi-faceted blitz-pop tunes to a crowd predominantly seated in the grass in the Troo Music Lounge. But at the request of Schaefer, concertgoers rose to their feet and it was then the show hit full throttle. Featuring
two pounding drums, many tunes off the outfit's debut full-length We Breed Champions, including the driving 'Handcuff Killa' took on a snap-crackle-pop rhythmic feel as key blips rode slashing, sharp guitars courtesy of axeman Sam Stratton. Schaefer leapt atop amps and bounced about in the audience before returning to his keyboard for "Broke Calculator," which grooved at a slower pace, a bevy of Moog notes segueing into sliding guitars and a catchy, lackadaisical vocal ramble. It's discoveries like Royal Bangs that make a late night (well after 2:45 A.M.) worthwhile." - William Goodman/Spin.com

The Hosts

"Wiith its roots in Saturday night beer-fueled singalongs in the living room of Greg and Melissa Host, the band slowly grew into a 5 piece outfit made distinctive by the classic sounds of vintage instruments coupled with modern electronica, soaring m/f harmonies, jangly pop tunes and brutally confessional lyrics. The self proclaimed stewards of the new Paisley Movement, The Hosts are on a mission to return bubblegum and LSD, clean jangling guitars and love beads to the musical landscape. Clad only in Nehru jackets and decades of pretense, war, pollution and inactivity, The Hosts have been roused from their somnambulant hibernation like languid seed pods planted in 1967, ready to take on whomever should listen to their shameless modern pop songs. Peace, and In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, to you all."

Aleph-1 (Ann Arbor)

"...it's the electro-jazz / power prog rock trio Aleph-1 from Ann Arbor, with their sleek sci-fi inflected synths and rapid rhythms... With staggering instrumental compositions that feel almost orchestral in structure, they still keep a distinctly jazzy improvisational looseness. Their debut self-titled album galvanizes cinematic sounding electronic odysseys that combine the fantastic urgency one might feel if we were trapped inside our computer fending off viscous viruses or rival 'red guy' motorcycle riders ala 'Tron'; their sound is an invigorating clash of nostalgic '50's sci-fi film vibes with kitschy UFO synth howls charged by 80's new wave buzzy grooves and prog-rock trounced rhythms. Live, the band can be as fiery and ferocious as an amped up jazz rampage, utilizing drums with 2 samplers, 2 synthesizers and the occasional guitar. Their debut album is a staggering journey of invigoration, melodrama and dream-pop sounds apes; the transitions are baffling (the percussion on "DB" goes from hip/hop to speed-metal in one measure yet the flow is as natural as the sun setting); while the synths on "Plan 9" start with a Twilight Zone vibe then morph into a house-rave blitz; and "GoodCop" features a bass line so full of character and charm you'd think it to be born from the soulful grooves of Motown." ANN ARBOR CURRENT, JUNE 2008

Red China

"Red China rocks spaced out dissonance like nobody else in town right now. They've completed something like 45 CDr albums of original material and show no signs of stopping with their first official release. Spacey, psyched out space rock with elements of VU, Spacemen 3 and other torchbearers. Are you ready for a totally engaging zone out?"

El Gato Legato

"El Gato Legato is an instrumental foursome comprised of former members of Viola Peacock, Larval, Jolly Llama and Fathers of the Id. Swirling violins and iridescent guitar tones, supported by solid, melodic bass lines and explosive percussion define a sound that is reminiscent of indie rock, avant-noise, shoegaze and psychedelic. While utilizing typical rock instrumentation, the group pays very close attention to tones and timbres to create attention-grabbing soundscapes driven by world-beat rhythms.
Hyper-shifting moods and dynamics, ranging from soothing to spacey,
exhilarating to volatile, the music defies easy categorization and evokes a unique style that is ever-evolving. Thematically, the music of El Gato Legato is a parable of urban decay. It is the soundtrack to a loss of innocence, to stepping forth in a world that is falling apart. It is about narrow escapes and perseverance under dire circumstances. It is a look at modern Detroit through the distorted filters of avant-garde noise, hypnotic rhythms, crushing hooks, and melodies of redeeming sadness."

Mother Whale

"The Mother Whale is a slight of hand, compositions drawn around a single (sometimes double[stereo]) room mic, improvised and distilled, slowly, through various fixtues of collandric mise en scene. Instruments change, locations and moods change, and thus it is presented so."

French Horn Rebellion(Milwaukee)

"..Paddling down along a long wild amazonian river in my birch bark canoe. Look left, look right. My belly aches from whiskey. Look left again. A shadow whisks through the trees. "Alas," I think to myself. "Twas but a harmless snake fetching its prey." Look to the right. My heart jumps and tremors with fear, for yet again, the trees eerily dance along the banks. Rustle. Rustle. Rustle. "Caw" .. utters the lonely exotic bird. Echoeing the lonely fear in my heart. Caw. Caw. Caw. And into the center of that lonely pit -- ATTACK! An arrow grazes my ear, and disappears into the water. My fear is becoming paralyzing. Who are these assailants? Who could
these enemies be? TBC. BTW Did you know that Robert did a forensics speech in 7th grade about how to play French Horn? Fantastic."

Marco Polio and the New Vaccines

"When you go to a Vaccine show it's kind of like going to the zoo, you can't really expect the animals to cooperate, it's probably going to smell bad,They won't aknoledge the fact that they're on display, actually sometimes the dudes kind of sound like elephants getting it on, but damnit you payed your five bucks so you're probably going to stay for a while."

Charlie Slick

"It's hard to sit still while writing this…I mean, you may not dig this if you don't like to move, shake, bob or weave…as Charlie's hallucinogenic circus romp rave anthem simply suggests, "Let's Dance!" No sense staying locked in your stuffy stances in the back, sipping PBR and scoffing at all this mellifluous hip shaking; Charlie Slick has always been about liberation! Goofy, soapy, glittery, no one's watching, liberation. A once punk-rocker turned flamboyant hunky nerd, offering himself up to the beats, with possessing synth swirls and arresting choruses, like some overly sexy cartoon or an unabashedly un-hip pied piper, with a weird wavy
croon combining David Byrne's shamanistic quaver with David Gahan or Gary Numan's neon-glow melodrama. Jeff Milo/Deep Cutz"

the Wall Clocks

"A coming together of various parts, be them dials, hands, quartz
movements, or pendulums, the ticking has begun at last. "Who" is what doesn't matter. All that matters is that four individuals have cramped themselves within basement after basement, and have finally decided to add their element to the musical landscape of this hardly round world. Each bringing his own spirit and own shade to the color of the light, they have created something blinding. Walk down the ever twirling staircase, and you will hear an array of riffs, licks, doodles, and bits emitted from a speaker that produces the sounds channeled from the brain, to the arm, to the fingers, to the fretboard, to the pickups, through the chord, to a
speaker and into your ear. The incredible generation of simple harmonic motion. Joe is in his own world creating this never-ending whirlwind of sounds. A solid layer is created as he makes things happen. The bluesman parodied, i think not. This is the real thing that seems to have been lost amid the Hollywood bull that has overshadowed the true musician for years. Jonathan is in a corner somewhere, hunched over a legal pad with an acoustic guitar and an inspirational buzz in his head. That's all he needs. To interrupt him would be a mistake. He scribbles down words, knowing of the fact that he will have to express those complex emotions from his own mouth to a crowd of God knows how many, let them behind his
dark sunglasses, and into his head for 45 minutes straight. He looks forward to it every single time. Don't you? John , a rock, blows holes in the north wall, providing a base of bass to the mixture. Fear of emptiness is eliminated. Experience does not overshadow creativity, it seems, but strengthens passion, and the fun is still there. B.E.N. sits on his throne, beating at the skins and holding everything together. Suddenly, the four walls become connected. Every crash means something. Is that a jazz-rock beat on an acoustic ballad? You bet it is. That's the beauty of experimentation rather than overproduction. That's the word, isn't it. Experimentation. When did music stop becoming art? Maybe when the music took a backseat to the band itself... Well not anymore. The music is still the art, and if another focus is on the band, why shouldn't the band itself be art as well? And art is meant for experimentation. Idols, loves, and influences play a role. Why not create? Why not expand? The time is right. Just look to The Wall Cloks, and you'll see what time it is..."

"Cougar the Tiger fuses the epic and the minimal while preserving an indie sensibility; and they do it all in three minutes (note the sophisticated use of a semi-colon). They make powerful music that is at once dramatic, appealing, unrefined, and polished. Their mission is to write songs that are as honest as possible, without any inflated ideals or egoism (ahem). They conjure an amalgamation of styles from classic rock to metal, new wave to folk. This is the eye of the cougar!"

Aloud (Boston)

"Fiery rock n' roll band Aloud is known for their two lead singers, tight male/female vocals, exceptionally strong songwriting, and energy-filled live performances. Lead vocalists/guitarists Jen de la Osa and Henry Beguiristain have been writing songs together since their early teens and have crafted the passionate rock n' roll sound of Aloud with bassist Roy Fontaine and drummer Ross Lohr."

Superdot

"SUPERDOT has given Detroit, and the greater ska community one of the
freshest and most innovative ska bands. SUPERDOT has not limited their music to just the ska theatre of operations, they've expanded their perimeter to reach different cultures. From small villages to bog cities, they've brought something new to show off for those who have seen too much of the same uniform. Inspired by wackiness and driven by the courage of alcohol and underdogs worldwide they have captured the fun, recklessness and even the dark side of ska."

Pewter Cub

"...the exhilaration of finding a band like Pewter Cub, conjuring the stirringly raw and guileless sounding basement-aesthetic that’s been hard to come by in post-2000-indie-rock (think early Guided By Voices, a more-surfy Young Marble Giants, or the caustic synth garnish of The Fall)...the Hamtramck duo started in August '05 and render an eloquent, heartfelt fuzz-rock, minimalist in its rhythms and straight to the point with its dreamy hooks, brazen booms, synth buzzes and hypnotic vocal tones." --Jeff Milo, Real Detroit

The INterior Project

"The interior project came to be not very long ago. Jamiel had broken his finger and wasn't very happy about it. He convinced himself that although he could play bass again, guitar chords were out the door. Jamiel tends to make a big deal out of every little thing. It's in his nature to do so. He turned out to be wrong and got his digit working well enough again to write some songs. The songs came quickly; partly because they're simple, but mostly because that's how he does it. So, around the same time Jamiel ran into a friend at a barbecue who thought it would be fun to put
together some beats and help Jamiel out with the songs. The friend's name was Dial81 and Jamiel was pretty happy about it. Then, Jamiel's other friend Nick wanted to play bass. So he did."

*In Civilian Clothing

"Tender but taut indie rock, heavy on drone but with plenty of bells and whistles (an e-bow even!) to pretty things up. Think of a rockier version of the Postal Service mixed with a less histrionic ncarnation of Sunny Day Real Estate."

Lowry (Brooklyn)

"Alex Lowry's psychedelic neo/anti-folk pop is an offbeat offshoot where the hurdy gurdy man takes us on a twisted magical mystery tour. Hot wired and intense, even in its quieter moments, this is challenging, innovative music that pushes established boundaries with alarming ease." CREATIVE LOAFING, ATLANTA

  Warhorses

"Discordant, elusive and utterly hypnotic, Warhorses conjure a dark, trance-like spell that contrasts sharply with the prevailing music trends of the time. Their dissonance, feedback, and alternate tunings create a new sonic landscape, one that redefines what rock guitar can be. Warhorses resurrect the concept of space-rock for a new era, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance. Often sounding like they're channeling a fever-soaked Velvet Underground (circa White Light, White Heat), while drawing further influence from the free-form noise experimentalism of the Stooges, and melding it with a performance art aesthetic borrowed from the New York post-punk avant-garde, Warhorses redefine what noise means within rock & roll."

Funk Brother Dennis Coffey

"If you're into the music that came out of the city of Detroit in the 60's, then you'll already be familiar with the name Dennis Coffey. His name appears on many fine soul sides across many record labels. His guitar work and countless arrangements grace many other important tracks of the 60's and 70's...A former Funk Brother, Dennis has played guitar on over 100 soul music gold records at Motown in Detroit with artists such as The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and The Four Tops. He has recorded in LA with artists such as Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves, and Ringo Starr. Dennis has recorded with George Clinton and also played on many Northern Soul records at Golden World Studios like Real Humdinger by J.J. Barnes and Open the Door to your Heart by Darrel Banks."

DUENDE!

"You're in for a wild Western psychedelic sonic ride thru the streets of Detrit when Duende takes the stage. This Motor City five have been taking their show on the road and introducing others to their brand of dark Americana rock"

the Readies

"Danny Kroha is, of course, already well-known on the Detroit rock 'n' roll scene; you'll recall his work with Gories and, more recently, the Demolition Doll Rods. Following the dissolution of the latter group and a brief spell trying to go solo, the guitarist's back with a new band dubbed the Readies, which is now beginning to kick up some real racket about town. Armed with a sound overflowing with Motor City garage, rock 'n' roll, fuzz and raw power, Kroha and the Readies are, ahem, ready. As for the Readies' sound, Kroha is quick to list his many influences. "We're a rock 'n' roll band," he states emphatically. "I don't like to elaborate much further than that. I really love '60s and early '70s rock — British rock and all that stuff. And then of course, there's plenty of Lou Reed thrown in there as well because I love the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed. I'm sure there's a little New York Dolls in there too." "We do a Mott The Hoople cover," Weedon adds. "Whenever somebody asks me, though, I
always say that we're just 'rock 'n' roll'. Because that's exactly what we are." -MetroTimes

the Rise of the Peace Balloon

"We love to create smiles. Therefore, you,as a person of Earth should listen and feel the energy that flows through all of us.We must appreciate the small things that are often overlooked and in the process become better people. There's nothing more beautiful than a turtle sunning on a log while the worlds at work."

Your 33 Black Angels (New York)

"This spring, the New York band Your 33 Black Angels quietly released one of this year's treasures: Lonely Street (no label), in a numbered vinyl-only edition of 250 (I've got number nineteen). The LP is worth the hunt for its pop-wise rattle (Pavement with a case of the Strokes) and singer Josh Westfal's resemblance, in dry, frank voice and cautious optimism, to another local institution: Lou Reed on the Velvet Underground's fourth album, Loaded."
-David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Night Shall Eat These Girls and Boys

"Night shall eat these girls and boys. is a musical collective orchestrated by William t. Skillets. Sometimes we are a lot of people, sometimes a few, sometimes just one. The music is mostly electro-pop these days and it's getting dancier all the time. Let us know if you want to join in."

Love Meets Lust

"Love Meets Lust Is a four member Electro/new wave/rock group from Detroit Michigan. The bands music could be described as retro 80's electro dance amped up with modern tones, reminiscent of days gone by yet totally fresh and new."

Pewter Cub

"The exhilaration of finding a band like Pewter Cub, conjuring the stirringly raw and guileless sounding basement-aesthetic that's been hard to come by in post-2000-indie-rock (think early Guided By Voices, a more surfy-Young Marble Giants, or the caustic synth garnish of The Fall), or as singer/guitarist/bassist Regan puts it: "Sonic Youth, Sparks, the Ventures, Wall of Voodoo, the Manchester/Sheffield sounds. We love John Carpenter's music and films. The best we can say for our sound is it's kind of torch-song-disco-surf-wave-distortion with a dash of humor."

"Elemental narratives that resolve to light but only after a sojourn"

Lightning Love!

"Lightning Love is an Ann Arbor-area outfit with twee-pop songs in the vein of Glo-Worm or other 7"-friendly groups from the early 1990s. A bit of woe, a bit of sweet, some keys and some drinks. With some promo this shit could move millions at Target."

Elle and the Fonts

"Detroit's Holly Golightly with some Runaway's attitude"

Deleted Scenes (DC-Brooklyn)

"Deleted Scenes moved us past the first date and right into that stage where you have an unbridled passion for someone and can't keep your hands off them trying to discover every inch and exhausting yourself in the effort. Blowing off the haze of a Sunday night, fronted by the wiry charisma of Dan Scheuerman and his eyes that hang like he never sleeps, they brought a thumping big sound and tension to the proceedings. They show lots of DC influences in their playing, from Dismemberment Plan yelps and angles to Fugazi ragga and Jawbox rumble. However, it was when they hit the big radio-ready choruses (reminding me actually of Old 97s – a reference the band might cringe at) that they were the most interesting. Knocking into shape a little more and finding their own voice (trust those pop instincts and more synth – I know I know) and they could be big news soon."

Jehovah's Witness Protection Plan

"JWPP loves to rock. We don't care what you think about rock and roll or 36 year old boy-men who play it. Neither of us are dead... and we are SURE of that. Are you? Over the last year we've met a ton of people that we absolutely fell in love with. Pretty sure you all know who you are. If you even have to think twice about it, then it's you we're talking about. If you want to join the list, come see us... everybody has a shot at being loved with JWPP. To borrow a phrase from a childhood church song, "red and yellow black and white"... We also fell in love with each other, ourselves, and rock and roll. You can scoff, smirk, point fingers and giggle... your picket fence will never keep us off your lawn. If you hear a knock on your door, don't be surprised. We are coming to wake you up and make you live again."

Netherfriends

"Some guy once told us we sound like the bastard pop-band from hell that he has always been looking for," says singer/guitarist/pianist/anything-ist, Shawn Rosenblatt of his fuzzed experimental gypsy space-folk trio, The Netherfriends. The guy also said their sound might sound like, "if the Zombies and Animal Collective met and recorded in a kitchen."

the Whales

"Sebadoh and Elvis Costello go fishing"

Red China

"Red China rocks spaced out dissonance like nobody else in town right now. Theyve completed something like 45 CDr albums of original material and show no signs of stopping with their first official release. Spacey, psyched out space rock with elements of VU, Spacemen 3 and other torchbearers. Are you ready for a totally engaging zone out?"

The Cut Loose

"maximum Detroit R&B. A reminder to who only follows the mold of Garage rock that there are more legitimate heirs..like the Cut-Loose"

The Hadituptoheres

"Do you ever get that feeling when you are driving home from a job you hate or a situation you can no longer take? That pretty much sums it up. Plus, if you've been paying attention to a lot of music lately, we're sure you'll understand." — The Hadituptoheres

Yeah, I get that feeling all of the time thinking about the overwhelming amount of people who like shitty music and how often good music is overlooked. Hopefully these guys won't be. Their music deals with the same shit that a majority of us pissed off individuals face; "Punk, justice, making love and breaking up in the Motor City," according to them. A perfect blend of aggressive punk with catchy poppy type hooks make them a band that everyone with good taste can enjoy. "The original idea was for us to be a heavily punk-influenced power-pop band. However, the poppier side started to fade as we got into writing together more and more. These days we try to be more aggressive. Our songs are louder, noisier and faster. We haven't totally abandoned our pop roots though; hooks are peppered throughout to help keep people singing along," they say."
Real Detroit Weekly

Reverse X Rays (Austin)

"This Austin based band returns from the future with post Western insight. Their name is derived from this tidbit: According to James Brown (the late expert on the subject), Reverse X Rays come out of the TV set and are used by nefarious federal agents to alter the brains of our fellow citizens. #5 in Ten Austin Bands you should know compiled by the Daily Texan, July 5th 2007"

The Fury

"The Fury is a punk rock power trio from Detroit. Originally formed in 1983 in Ann Arbor, It is hard to pinpoint their style, but it is certainly punk, sprinkled with thrash and a pinch of rock. Mainly, you will hear fast songs with furious lyrics, in addition to power chords, and righteous guitar solos by Dr. Vic RoX. The steady non-drum-solo beat is provided by Mr. Evan Rude. And the no-nonsense bottom end attack is graciously presented by Madd Anthony."

  The Thunder Chickens

"From the moment the music started, it occurred to me that one doesn't merely listen to or watch the Thunderchickens, one travels with them. They take you and you go - no questions. No hesitation. No doubts. You know that even though you have no idea where you're headed, it's exactly where you need to go..pounding into you and changing not merely your opinions about music, but the way you hear music - the way you hear everything. That's the journey you are now on. They conjure up a sonic tidal wave. A surf breaking rocks (what surf-rock should have been). Jekel ravishes his guitar (think the grittier portrayals of "Leda and the Swan"), and Matt Kramer on drums and Justin McKinnon on bass carve cliffs and reefs riddled with the perches of screaming seabirds. Mel, in the center of it all, makes love to that ocean of sound. Offers herself to the sea with no fear of drowning. But it would be a mistake to write her off as merely a sexual force of energy - it is her words, her voice, her violin that make her a gifted artist who makes you willing to kill or die to have her there on that stage."

Almost Free

"Almost Free has the perspective of many european bands that reflect back to us our lineage of pop music"

The Mantons

"He decided that it was time to start a band. Why? Because it was time. And so, he did. This is the virtual fruit of those labours. Naturally, actually seeing the band is the only way to truly cast judgement. This virtual world, well, it will always leave something to be desired. There are many here who create megalomaniatic labrynthine sites, complete with tits and ass, and that's OK. But it doesn't really mean anything. Manton has always drawn a line in the sand: Shit, or get off the pot. That's his motto. This band doesn't have a ghost of a chance here, but on a stage, they'll fight it out like David and by the power of Fiat will beat any pasty, Jowelly Goliath. That's becasue The Mantons are lean and mean. Nobody has ever given them an inch; they probably never will. That's because people are afraid of a band that tells it like it is. But, in the end, The Mantons Do The Thing That Must Be Done. They are Here, for You. Enjoy."

Emily Rose

"surprisingly soulful , smooth, and sultry", Pauline Lupercio, Detroit News. "truth be told the girl has one hell of a set of pipes", Adam Bark, The Record.

  Millions of Brazilians

"Millions of Brazillians have a hard, booming sound, a rough, pushy rock and pop vibe pulling as much inspiration from Stevie Wonder as it does Fugazi. The trio, Nick and brothers Zoz and Derek, prove that power trios can exist without a bass player – and that it adds to versatility; says Zoz, "We found that working out the problems of not having [a bass player] made for a more interesting writing process," adding that other influences include Martin Gaye for Nick, Jonny Greenwood for Derek and Interpol for Zoz. Piston-pumping-percussions, a low buzzing, wide swaying guitar hooks like unforgiving rapids under a cutting-toned lead that shrieks and wails into beautifully caustic solos.

Manna and Quail

"{Black screen- and slowly red light on the horizon. The Detroit River is burning. Sparks and embers reel and fly from the blaze and scatter out of the urban inferno. One by one they plummet into the soft dark surrounding the city. Green green blue the ashes are reflections from tv screens, lcd displays, unblinking eyes, streetlights. In a small corner the diffused light rejoins. Enter Steve Saputo- all five o'clock shadow and bottle green eyes Enter an idea a polychromatic landscape of emotion, strange chords and sublime melodies Enter Matt Walsh Enter Gjon Gegaj coral eyelids and lashes- bass building a foundation for castles in the sky Awash in the embryonic pulse of the hearbeat emerges Adam Davis essential, innocent Together these streams of molten consciousness begin flowing back, back to the ruined volcano of a fallen metropolis. A blazing stream of sound winding towards the source of motion. The past and future of Detroit. Manna and Quail together. Just over a year ago from the imagination of Steve Saputo a musical aesthetic emerged blending ethereal harmonies with a gritty pop rhthym. He formed Manna and Quail with a handful of talented musicians playing around Detroit. Each one of the band members brings a unique musical perspective that complements and completes Saputo's distinct sound."

Friendly Foes

"Friendly Foes first took form as a solo project of Thunderbirds Are Now! frontman-guitarist Ryan Allen. The outfit shares TAN!'s nervous energy (and, naturally, Ryan's itchy adenoidal man-child vocals), but the band tips its hat to latter '90s indie-rock instead of TAN!'s Brooklyn-damaged dance-rawk. Sez Ryan: "Our jams are constructed using the simplest of methods — a few chords, some lyrics about people we hate, some crashing, some banging, some thudding and some rumbling. This band is basically a replication of my 7-inch collection from 1996, and I'm proud of that."

METH TEETH

The debut 7" EP from the ominously named Portland combo Meth Teeth has arrived this week on Sweet Rot Records, and it's got such an unsettling vibe of depravity and ruinous tones ringing throughout its grooves that it might just be that record that keeps you up at night, listening for those inevitable voices to creep inside your head. The band includes members of Artificial Limbs, Leper Print, and Night Wounds and churns out four powerful and subdued songs that reach beyond the scope of their members' previous incarnations, with an unnerving twisted conviction. It penetrates the genre confines with ease, just like some of their contemporaries such as Sic Alps and Nothing People have done so well, and ushers their name into the hushed inner circles of the discerning underground rock'n'roll cognoscenti. The 7" is divided between two sides that show different facets to their direction, and the first tracks linger in a muddier psychedelic swamp of twirling melodies that form a beautiful backdrop for the eerie echoed vocals to seep into, and you'll see how well Meth Teeth craftily utilize their haunting guitar umbrage to maximum effect with such lush minimalism. "Bus Rides" slides around the grease and grime-laden blueprint that they have forged out of fragments of broken light bulbs and illusions of glassine spiders crawling up their arms, and instantly garners repeated listens. The b-side proffers more acoustic-based tracks that slowly bleed with such a hypnotic charm that it pulled me in from all directions before I even knew it. It may not hit you blindsided right off the bat, but after the third or fourth play, it's clear that Meth Teeth have something very good going on below the surface, and it may just be the unassuming b-side that clinches it. Starting off with "To My Good Friend," the next two tracks have hovered in my soft-boiled brain repeatedly for days and add even more certainty to the fact that some of today's best music lurks on the backsides of 7"s, just slightly out of the direct light that helps keeps it menacing, dark, and interesting. Don't sit on your ass and pick up Meth Teeth's debut 7"

Checker's Record Collective Presents a CD Release for Jesus

The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre

"The Jesus Chainsaw Massacre have been a fixture on the Detroit scene for over a year now, giving kids nightmares not seen since your big sister's first year at Camden College in the Reagan 80's. They are the proponents of the growing genre of 'slop fuzz', a mixture of The Cramps, Creation, and T Rex. They are proud of having played over 100 shows with never the same setlist. See what strange business they have for Corktown for their debut CD release fest."

The Sheeny Men

"I want all of you to know that The Sheeny Men are comprised of three guys who are passionate about we are doing. If only we could convince all those other people out there that there are two things that lead a revolution: a dictator, or music. Let's do it through music. Be passionate my friends and live life to its fullest."

Tokyo Sex Whale (Ontario)

"...3 piece based out of Ottawa, Canada, worshippers of the great whale, half brothers (and sister) to the almighty albatross, speakers of the gentle word, TokyoSexWhale aims to provide a sonic experience that will have its audience reeling at all ends of the spectrum. TokyoSexWhale met in a pitch-black room that all three visited to obtain enhanced sexual prowess from ancient Asian sources. After the police raid, they exchanged telling glances while waiting to post bail in lock-up. On The Outside, they utilized the awesome power of a 1966 Plymouth Fury to make good their escape, and discovered a mutual musical affinity. Ever since that fateful night, TokyoSexWhale endeavours to bring their experiences to the forefront of their performances to enlighten and delight crowds. Their songs are not songs; they are life lessons to be learned the hard way. Or we might have gotten drunk and started a wicked band in Yogi's basement. Only time will tell..."

  Woman(Knoxville Tennessee)

"A relatively new quartet fronted by Chris Lowe (with drummer Jason Stark, guitarist Tyler Mucklow and bassist Damion Huntoon)stole the night. As soon as they opened with "Flood Plain," a primal chant that feels more like a consummate rain dance than a rock song, we were enthralled, powered by strange juju. Lowe, shaking a pair of maracas, looked like a shaman,
summoning us into collective mind trip, inviting us to leave our bodies, and just move into something a little more sweaty and beer-heavy. Gravity lost its grip. Sounds jacked directly onto the cerebral cortex, shrouding reality in a thick purple veil. We were dancing, even if we didn't realize it."-Metropulse Review

the Pizazz

"Bizarre, sorta spazzy organ led pop, punk weirdness. Really refreshing and interesting and great. It's like New Wave, but not in a retro-chic, sideshow sorta way. I'll buy a drink for anybody who can help tell me what exactly they sound like. Is it the future? I hope so." - Rich Hanson

Fontana

The band's sound is something that is completely lacking from most modern music. It's a hodge podge of several prehistoric artifacts such as The Stooges, surf music and Sun Ra that is sonically challenging without being completely spastic. "It's not like we have some set formula we operate by," Paul states. "After playing songs hundreds of times, what may sound totally improvised or whatnot is just natural."

Something else that is natural is the band's exciting stage show. Paul flops around like a chicken with his head chopped off while Colin destroys his drumset and Geoff is left to smile and watch the mayhem unfold. It's certainly not boring, folks. "I'm sure I feel some 'connection to the music' or I'm letting out some inner frustration about things and all that
kind of crap," Paul says, "but I really find a thrill in acting so absurdly and having people shake my hand for doing so." - RDW

CITYFEST AFTER PARTY!

Canja Rave
(BRAZIL)

"Imagine yourself recovering from the worst kind o hangover, and still you plan about going to a party the other day. At that time you don´t feel like doing anything just sit back, sleep, recover from all that beating, but sudden opportunities of new fun and entertainment makes your brain tell your body that you can do it! You will go out again and have some
fun, leaving all troubles behind. These sudden changes of attitude and feelings common in bipolars originated the name CANJA RAVE, which means chicken soup rave, as in a mood change of going from chicken soup to a rave party. Canja Rave also is
also getting the opposites together, like men and women, the formation of the duet or you may call it band with Paula Nozzari and Chris Kochenborger. The duet consists of Paula drumming and singing, while Chris sings and play guitar. They both compose all of their songs and lyrics. Songs that were done simply to exercise the composing style of a possible
new project, or even song writing for ther artists, however, due to the coincidences and desteny the couple became a band, because of an uncompromised rehearsal to test the music they had written. Since Chris was a bass player all his life playing jazz, and rock bands, he made his guitar sound more bass like. Paula had to adapt to the singing part too
focusing on both playing the drums and her voice.
The result of the Canja Rave, a band that came from chicken soup to a rave, is that we get to travel a lot, meet people, and get everyone rocked!"

  The Fifty

"Attacks and retreats. Structure anddisorder. Subtleties and blatancies. From five distant points of Michigan come the five young men of The Fifty. Their songs live somewhere on the edge of pop music, sprinkled with equal parts distortion and clean, catchy harmonies. Two balanced guitars, unpredictable rhythm, steady bass and sassy keyboards fill out their five-piece sound. Although still collectively new to the sport of rock, they are no rookies, having spent years writing and performing in other bands. Sure, there are many new local bands chasing a quick piece of Detroit hype. But The Fifty, with dedication, intelligence, and disgust for musical fads, won't quit until those bands are outlived."

Modernlull

"If Jim O'Rourke joined XTC and went out drinking with the Buzzcocks"

The Wednesdees

"The Wednesdees offer a throw back to the R&B influenced rock that made
Detroit a musical mecca in the '70's. A set list covering everything from
The Casinos to The Count Five takes us back to a time when music could
change the world or at least make us forget the world sucked."

  SIRSY

(pronounced "sir-see"): Fiery, sultry, soulful indie pop that rocks! "LITTLE BAND... BIG SOUND! --The Boston Globe (Boston, MA).
"Krahmer can sing, scream, blow flute, drum, & tease, and she does them all REALLY well. Libutti plays everything else (he even uses his feet!) .... Go see sirsy!" --The Village Voice (NYC).
""Radio friendly, and eye-friendly, but the material is actually REALLY good. Like pop songs used to be before MTV". --Indie Sounds NY (NYC).

In Civilian Clothing

Sounds Like: Tender but taut indie rock, heavy on drone but with plenty of bells and whistles (an e-bow even!) to pretty things up. Think of a rockier version of the Postal Service mixed with a less histrionic incarnation of Sunny Day Real Estate. Sound Sculpting: Camp and McLaughlin began playing music together 11 years ago in a straightforward pop-rock band, Roots of Resistance, soon picking up Drzewiecki and finally singer/songwriter Clayton, who has probably had the biggest influence on steering the band in an xperimental/art rock direction.
-Chad Swiatecki (Flint Journal THE EDGE)

Wally Dogger (Chicago)

"The members of Wally Dogger are the guys in the cubicle near you, literally. 'We're the regular guys in the cube next door,' said Pauly Doerr, who plays bass and keyboards, as well as sings for the band. 'We hope that average person who hates their job can relate to our lyrics.' The trio, which includes Matt Donehoo (drums) and Jeff Keel (guitar), started Wally Dogger while working in the IT department of a law firm.
Naturally, office-world technology plays a prominent role in the band's music. 'People listen to us and they say we're geek rock or some sort nerd rock,' Doerr said. 'We're not trying to be geek rock or nerd rock, it just happens that we're playing or singing about fire-wire cables or network cables. People take that as being geek rock.' For those still in doubt, Doerr happily will invite you onstage to use their puppet. Yes,
they have a puppet and is name is BoBo. 'Yeah, we bring BoBo on stage from time to time, and we have people operate him,' Doerr said. 'We try to stand out with a unique show.' Wally Dogger takes pride in its live show, even when puppet-less. 'We really try to give the audience their money's worth. We don't just get up there and close our eyes and go into
auto-pilot,' Doerr said. 'We really try to keep the fans involved.' Deep down--as the band's most recent album, 'I Surrender, When Do I Start,' reveals--the members of Wally Dogger are cubicle people.

"ModestMouse meets Sublime in an indie bred and and funk fed summons"

The Philly Crawlers(Kalamazoo)

"Self-described as "the least rock 'n' roll rock band" due to the lack of any tattoos or piercings amongst them, no history of heavy illegal drug use, and lack of belligerence during intoxication (alcohol being their drug of choice, perhaps their only semblance of rock integrity), the band still enjoys turning it up loud and taking an audience by storm, or something like that."

  Bipolaroid (New Orleans Garage/Psychedelic Rock)
"Ben Glover's a trippy tunesmith of the first order; his gifts for
lysergic mood-setting and and clever musical phrasing shine through the mire of cloudy beatific bridges; vintage-sounding instruments and paisley melodies of a perfectly hazy Pink Floyd daydream..it's still roots rock just with different roots"

The Pizazz
"They're young, they're crazy, and they write good pop songs. catchy, upbeat pop songs. The Pizazz won't bore you with the same old detroit rock n roll sound-- they'll dazzle you with a fresh approach to indie/new wavey rock. songs to hum along to, songs to sing while driving in the car. this one is really worth your time."
- Windy & Carl

Bad Medicine at the Campfire
"In a city mostly known for its rock and electronic music, you don't often hear bands playing the good ole down-home, beer-swilling, cowboy-boot-wearing tunes that most would consider country. That is, unless you've heard Bad Medicine at the Campfire. This three-piece outfit plays the kind of songs that will remind you of all the heartache and swagger of a Hank Williams tune. And Bad Medicine at the Campfire still manages to be original and exciting enough to captivate an audience,
whether they're inebriated or otherwise. The arrangements are simple enough; the band consists of two guitar players, one on rhythm, one on lead guitar, and a drummer. Their songs are about the Vietnam War and worshipping the devil. And as bizarre as this may sound, they seem to fit perfectly with the band's slow twangy hum that sometimes drones and sometimes, or lack of a better term, rambles."

PRONTO

Robot Army (Formerly The Pontiac Punks)
The PONTIAC PUNKS were a cool rock/punk band back in 1975. The played with a lot of cool local bands as well as out in NYC in 1976 – Ramones and others came to see them play at Max's Kansas City and the Ocean Club. Creem Magazine did an article on them comparing them to the Stooges and MC5. They were Lester Bangs band of choice for his going away party when he left Detroit for NYC in 1976.

The CAT THIEVES present:

WHEN DRUM ASHEENZ ATTACK

featuring

THE ATOMIC BABIES (live)- DRUMASHEENZ - BROOKLYN

Atomic Babies were born when Joey Jupiter began cranking out hard acid tracks in the early 90s in the basement. Since those days Atomic Babies have toured the world headlining everything from dirty warehouse parties with secret map points to mega one off events with 5,000 plus, to the pretentious New York, LA and Chicago night clubs (if you have ever heard Atomic Babies / Joey Jupiter, you know that he's best heard in dirty warehouse parties). The destructive duo recognized as atomic babies once plagued the rave scene with a dynamic presence and revolutionized a culture with their intense sets of analogue equipment. Today one member of the original atomic babies remains (Joey Jupiter) who continues to pour his heart into the music that has gained him worldwide success as an artist and through his distribution achievements. The group/movement (atomic babies) has taken on a new meaning to the misfits of the scene and music aficionados of the world. It stands for more than just a group conveying the message of electronic paradise. It symbolizes everything that is about keeping the music alive and not selling out to achieve the greater things. We are underground, we are hardcore, we are everything that you would want out of music. From live acts, to djs, to fire juggling circus antics, we take the things that are sacred to us and bring them to you without the conformist mind-set. So thanks for the support throughout the years, and join us on this next phase as we continue to push the limits of the music we love and collectively branch out to more and more people that want to be down with some hardcore mutha fuckers.

ERROL - THE CAT THIEVES - DETROIT

Record, Robots, Godzilla and Starcraft. if you have to ask then you just don't know. Having been around the D for a while now and sharing the stage with some of EDM's best. Errol is a dance floor killer. fusing the best in minimal, house, fidget and acid. He is sure to get your ass moving.
