the Anti-Villians
"Remember that time the Cardigan's broke into the Velvet underground's
heroin stash and fell asleep winding up a music box and tinkering on a toy
piano? The Antivillains do. In an age where girl-boy pop duos are the
hippest of the hip, The Antivillains have a leg up on 'em all with the
eerily similar, hauntingly gorgeous melodies of the brother-sister duo of
Ben and Sarah Cohen. The two — along with drummer Sam Woldenberg — craft
almost surreal, spacey, touching tunes that sparkle with charming pop
hooks while drawing on a whole history of classic American music. Both
vocalists have studied under Toledo's resident vocal jazz legend Jon
Hendricks, and the careful precision of fine art jazz radiates throughout
The Antivillains songs, providing a simultaneous feeling of fragile, yet
well stacked musical composition." - ryan bunch music writer
Zoos of Berlin
"A cosmopolitan pop sophistication hearkening back to some of rock's most
famous expatriate Berliners, David Bowie and Brian Eno -- and those two
are no jelly doughnuts." -Pitchfork
"...guitar atmospherics, some slightly proggy parts and a vocalist who
sounds effortless and charming...[Zoos drummer] Collin has worked on
tracking and remix sessions (including a Grammy-nominated remix for the
Junior Boys) with Carl Craig... Good sounding stuff, and I look forward to
more." -Larry Crane, Tape Op Magazine
Wildcatting
"Soft-spoken demigods, valiant gunslingers from a sun-baked cellophane
Leone picture, meticulous yet raucously ramshackle, like kung-fu
scientists – these potential saviors of instrumental uitar-and-drum rock
formed as stereotypically simple as the ol'-set up of mutual acquaintances
meeting and jamming in basements. Curious that four scrawny, shaggy
mid-Michiganders with thrift store shirts and trucker hats can make other
bands, metal-heads or casual indie-rockers tremble as though thrown at the
feet of the wrathful Zeus himself. Guitars roar over spastically streaming
mutant-jazz percussion fits; each composition is an epic dissertation."
The Vamps
"Powerful and passionate, The Vamps put on a performance full of energy
that made the wall hugging fans of the next band stand up, dance and
scream." -Nowpublic.com
Battling Siki
"Battling Siki is a Detroit-based band that connects the roots of various
musical traditions-rock, blues and country-and plants them in a soulful,
more contemporary ground. Grizzled trillmaster and guitar player Scott
Harrison fashions timeless songs that sway effortlessly, while his honest
and revealing tales are delivered with a guttural, amber-toned warble. The
band consists of four of the city's most seasoned, stout players, all whom
carve out their own identity and spirit for the purpose of the song. From
foot-stomping grooves to shivering ballads, Siki's performances are completely energetic and teeming with imagery and hope."

Wild Years
"Wild Years: Ann Arbor-based electronic/folk/indie-rock project conjuring
warm wholesome vibes of visceral basement dissertations spurred by
freaked-up electric buzzings, resonating closely to an almost danceable,
if not certainly psychedelic, vibe. Dig their hard hitting walls of guitar
gushers in a dizzy blitz of fuzzy alt-rock beauty ("This Rut is a Canyon")
or feedback warbled acoustic-led "Bartering for a Bike," conjuring
sidewalk-scuffed strolls in inverted-suburbia with heartfelt melody. "I'm
hoping to be able to find some sort of balance between pure energy and
mayhem, and a strong melodically defined vision," said songwriter Alex
Itkin. The UofM student DJs at the school radio, WCBN, exhuming rare '60s
psychedelic records and African music, throw in Elephant 6, Stephen
Malkmus, Jeff Tweedy and M. Ward also. With Bob Teixeira joining during
the project's prosperous show-filled summer, Wild Years look to have an
even busier autumn, with more shows, recordings and eventually inviting
more members. "I love noise and free spirit and just rockin' the fuck
out," said Alex, "but there's also something to be said for well-crafted
orchestral pop. -Jeff Milo/RDW"
Prussia
"Prussia's bag is full with strange, transmogrified takes on Motown and
reggae, filtered through an undeniable penchant for a healthy bit of punk
and caustic '90s indie-rock; their sound's facilitated by "a lot of weird
shit" in terms of instrumentation, be it a kick-drum flipped on its side,
beaten mercilessly with mallets or maybe djembes, sitars, melodicas,
theremins or "weird hula-girl shit." Prussia combine an odd Rasta-esque
falsetto voice over groove-and-bounce basslines, Afro-Cuban bending
percussion and sweetly sliding melodies with root beer float tasting
doo-wop refrains splotched over tribal experimental rock freakouts. -RDW

Pop Songs For People

dynamic..welcome to the new Post-Garage future and what a one it is.."

Tokyo Sexwhale
"Formed in the wintry depths of 2007, Tokyo Sexwhale was born a child of
nostalgia, but quickly outgrew it's diapers to don the jumpsuit of a true
rock band. Sharpened by the whetstone of improvisation, the founding members set out to make surf rock relevant again by injecting its putrid
corpse with liquefied adrenal gland. Bringing his Eastern European
cage-fighting skills, Stefan Krstovic funks around percussively, keeping
time like orange clockwork, laying the groundwork for a sound that comes
from a trio in number only (which we are not). As the driving force behind "The Whale", Nicolas Mirsky has the licks and the logs to lay the lumber
with his six-stringed rock rumbler, paying homage to the originators of
the surf guitar. Influenced by everything from funk to lightning storms to
deep-sea creatures, Thew caresses the black and whites to whip up tasty
treats for the masses to munch on whilst creating a soundscape hitherto
unknown on this side of the cosmosphere. Tyler Carr, when not donating
musical equipment to the wicked, brings his skills and scales to his
famous four string freshwater flounder and henceforth completes the
anatomy of the Whale in all its mammalian grandeur. Rooted in original
surf, and creating authentic originals, Tokyo Sexwhale looks to energize
and creatively open SE Michigan's fourth eye to the splendors of a truly
tumultuous torrent of tonal tweakings and tyraids. Surf's up, hoes down."
Inkface & the Digital Dream
"There's a theory that states that if anyone discovers exactly what the
universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be
replaced with an even more bizarre and inexplicable universe. Theres
another theory that states that this has already happened...."
